In our family, Northern Idaho has been a favorite destination for generations. In the summer we visit for fun on the lake, hiking and eating huckleberry everything. Ask us where to find the best huckleberry pie!
Year after year, driving around Lake Pend Oreille to the Hope Peninsula quiets the car as everyone takes in the beauty of the lake, mountains and trees.
Red Fir Hideaway has been in my family for almost 50 years, and we look forward to welcoming you to our little corner of heaven!
Red Fir Hideaway is a two-structure property consisting of a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home plus a studio-style cabin with a full bathroom, kitchen and loft.
The property is located on the picturesque Hope Peninsula which is part of the the David Thompson Game Preserve. If you've heard about the train noise in Hope, don't worry! We're on the opposite side of the lake where it's exceptionally quiet and peaceful!
Just across the street (and viewable from several spots inside the main house and cabin) is Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced Pond Or-Ray), Idaho's largest lake where guests can enjoy boating, fishing, water skiing and more!
We are approximately 30 minutes from Sandpoint and 45 minutes from Schweitzer Mountain.
The Great Room:
- Spacious great room with an oversized, super plush, sectional sofa
- Huge smart tv with live tv streaming and a dedicated Netflix account
- Office nook with bookshelves and a desk
- Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of Lake Pend Oreille
The Kitchen:
- Refrigerator, gas stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher
- Cookware, glassware, dinnerware and utensils
- Toaster, blender, slow cooker and other cooking gadgets
- Kitchen island and barstool seating
- Keurig coffee maker with a selection of k-cup pods, creamer and sugar
- Welcome snacks and beverages
The Dining Room:
- Dining table with seating for eight (plus additional barstool seating at the kitchen island)
The Primary Suite:
- King sized bed with comfortable mattress and pillows
- Smart tv with access to live tv streaming and Netflix
- In-room soaking tub (no jets) and dual vanities
- Separate toilet room
- "Secret" walk-in closet with hangers and luggage stands
- All bathrooms are equipped with towels, hand soap, toilet paper and hair dryer (plus showers have shampoo, conditioner and body wash)
- Please note that there is no door to the primary suite. It is accessed by a staircase in the dining room (see photos for visual clarification).
The Guest Bedrooms
- Two guest bedrooms are located on the main floor of the home, off of the great room
- Both bedrooms have queens sized beds with memory foam mattresses, a selection of sleeping pillows, and are made up with soft, quality linens.
- All bedrooms in the main house have a closet with hangers and luggage stands.
Guest Bathrooms:
- In-room soaking tub and vanities in the Primary Suite with a separate toilet room.
- Full bathroom between the two downstairs bedrooms with a shower/tub
- Full bathroom near the kitchen with a shower.
- All bathrooms are equipped with towels, hand soap, toilet paper and hair dryer (plus showers have shampoo, conditioner and body wash)
Cabin Details: The cabin is detached from the main house, with the kitchen, living room and king bed are all located on the main floor. A closed-in staircase leads up to a small loft with two, twin beds.
The Cabin Kitchen:
- Refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave
- Sink with dish drying rack (no dishwasher)
- Toaster and other cooking gadgets
- Keurig coffee maker with complimentary k-cup pods, creamer and sugar.
The Cabin Living Room:
- Loveseat and side tables
- Smart tv with access to live tv streaming and a dedicated Netflix account
- Jotul gas stove (fireplace) which is the heat source for the cabin
The Cabin Bedroom:
- King sized bed with memory foam mattress, a selection of sleeping pillows and soft, quality linens
- Wall sconce and a small bedside table with a charging port on each side of the bed
- White noise machine (the cabin and neighborhood are very quiet but many guests appreciate the option of ambient noise)
- Desk overlooking the grassy front yard and forest
The Cabin Bathroom:
- Fully equipped with toilet paper, hand soap, towels and quality bath products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash)
- Shower/tub combo
- Toilet
- Single sink vanity and mirror
- Small but functional!
The Cabin Loft:
- 2nd story loft accessed by staircase
- 2 twin beds with memory foam mattresses, a selection of sleeping pillows and made up with soft, quality linens
- Nightstand with lamp, charging port and a white noise machine
- The ceiling is vaulted (low above the beds) so the loft is best suited for children. Adults could sleep here as well, but keep the vaulted ceiling in mind.
The Outdoor Space:
- Guests will have exclusive use of the two deck spaces, which have a gas bbq, a dining table and chairs, and a conversation set with a fire pit table. We will supply one full propane tank for the bbq and one tank for the fire pit.
Other Amenities:
- Iron and ironing board
- Full sized washer and dryer with complimentary-use laundry detergent and fabric softener. We use only free & clear (allergy-friendly) laundry soaps. Machines located in the garage of the main house.
- Driveway parking (garage parking not available)
A Note on the Location and Potential Amenity Limitations:
Red Fir Hideaway is just that, a peaceful hideaway! The remote location allows for tranquility and privacy, but also brings some challenges. To eliminate any surprises, we ask that guests read through the following details before booking.
- Remote location - we are approximately 30 minutes from the nearest full grocery store, so plan ahead! There is a small market about 10 minutes away. There are also a few restaurants 10-15 minutes away. We keep a house manual on-site with all of our favorite spots or you can check out our blog!
- Wifi - the WiFi speed is fast but poor weather can interfere with the signal strength. Not much can be done about this, unfortunately. Use the down time to read a book, play a card game or enjoy good conversation with your travel companion!
- Well Water - Even though the house is across the street from a beautiful lake, our well water is limited (especially in the warm summer months). We ask that guests please be conscientious of water usage.
- Comes with both charm and quirks - This is an older home and while it is super comfortable and full of charm it also has the quirks (and sometimes creeks) of an older home. We love it and hope you will, too!
Guests have exclusive and private access to the property (main house and cabin). The garage is not available for guest parking but guests will have access to the garage to use the laundry machines if desired.

Red Fir Hideaway is located on the Hope Peninsula. The Peninsula is part of the David Thompson Game Preserve. You will almost certainly see grazing herds of whitetail deer and many other wild animals and birds. No hunting is allowed in the area.
Lake Pend Orielle is located across the street from the guest house. Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho’s biggest lake, at 43 miles long with 111 miles of shoreline. The lake can be accessed by the public boat launch in Hope off Highway 200 and also a number of other public boat launches throughout the area.
There are three local private marinas that offer daily docking
for a fee: Kramer’s Marina, Hope Marina, and Holiday Shores Marina.
The closest convenience store is at the gas station at Holiday Shores marina in Hope. They carry the basics - a little more than your average gas station market, but they are not a full grocery store. Monarch Market and The Pantry in Clark Fork will have a few more essentials. For a full service grocery store, you will need to go to Ponderay (Yoke’s) or Sandpoint.

Hope is best accessed by your own car. Uber and Lyft both service the area, but not always consistently - plan in advance.
